6 Excellent Entry-Level Digital Cameras

Published by: PC Magazine       07-24-2008        Read Complete Article
Article Summary

"The digital camera market is positively flooded with models in all shapes and sizes, which makes the task of finding a simple, inexpensive, entry-level shooter a tough one. If you're new to digital photography, your main objectives should be finding a camera that has both ease of use and room for growth. On one hand, you don't want to spend a fortune on a confounding camera with a raft of features you won't use, but settling on a super-cheap, stripped-down model that doesn't offer anything beyond the very basics is shortsighted. After all, once you get the hang of taking pictures, you'll want to play around with the camera to perfect your shots. Since manufacturers often slash features to keep prices down in the lower end of the spectrum, the key is finding the perfect balance of the two. These six cameras do just that. ...Continue Reading"

Choose Your Camera
Shopping for a digital camera is stressful. Most stores carry a fraction of the 200-plus cameras on the market, and except at specialty stores, salespeople aren't much help. You can ask friends for recommendations, but even if they love their camera, it might be discontinued, given short product cycles. Don't throw up your hands and give up. A litt......

Affordable, Portable Photo Labs for Dads & Grads
It's the stuff of granddads' dreams: The darling grandchild does something adorable, you shoot the picture, plug in the camera, and print out the photo right there. Though the process isn't quite as easy as using the old Polaroid, instant photo gratification is easier than you might think, and it sure beats trudging to your local drugstore.

More than Just a Pretty Picture
The line between all-purpose and photo ink jet printers is fading rapidly. Although the differences between them were clear in our ink jet roundup last year, today the distinctions are more fiction than reality. Manufacturers may call a given model an all-purpose printer or a photo printer, but in most cases, you really can't tell the difference. ......

SanDisk Read-Only Card Would Replace Flash in Cameras
"SanDisk, which leads the market in retail flash memory, plans to offer a cheap read-only memory card designed to store photos for 100 years.

The memory company, which used the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show as a springboard for its own consumer-electronics efforts, also plans to launch five new CE products within 90 days, SanDisk executives ......

Digital Cameras: The Best from the Best
Somehow, time has sent almost 11 months of 2004 hurtling past. The year speeds to a close, leaving holidays swirling around us in its wake. With celebrations drawing friends and families together, many will catch the final days, as they race by, in photo finishes. The timing is perfect - PC Magazine's Reader Satisfaction Survey for Digital Cameras ......

Round-up of 7 Megapixel Cameras
If you wanted an enthusiast or compact camera with a bit higher resolution than 6 megapixels but didn't want to spend around $1,000 for an 8MP camera, you were out of luck - until the recent release of a slew of 7MP cameras. For just $500 to $700, there is now a wide range of cameras that can produce images of up to 3,072-by-2,304 pixels, suitable ......

CES Preview: Digital Imaging
The Consumer Electronics Show isn't the biggest event of the year for camera and printer makers. The Photo Marketing Association show in February takes that cake. That doesn't mean that there won't be a ton of digital imaging products on the show floor at the 2005 CES. ......

Adobe Pushes DNG Image Format
Many photographers work in RAW-format files from their digital cameras and are frustrated by the many versions out there - varying not just from manufacturer to manufacturer but also from camera to camera. But Adobe is trying to solve that problem with its Digital Negative Specification.......

The Camera is the film - Rethinking Digital Photography
Since the first digital cameras arrived, and even during the era of video cameras, I have managed to take almost every new model made into the field. I've had enough experience with these cameras to conclude that eventually, serious photographers are going to have to deal with the simple fact that in digital photography, the camera itself is the fi......

Computer-Free Photo Printing
So you've just snapped that perfect shot of Junior taking his first steps. You're dying to get a printout, only you don't want to wait to download the image to your computer or haul your camera off to the nearest drugstore photo kiosk. No worries. A photo printer may just be exactly what you need.

Review of CVS One-Time-Use Video Camcorder
Rent or buy? That's the question these days for everything from real estate to music and DVDs. CVS is the first to reach the market, with the One-Time-Use Video Camcorder ($30 street): You buy......

Multifunction Photo Printers for Under $100
There are bargains, and then there are bargains. One would think that with all the things a typical multifunction printer (MFP) can do - such as scan, copy, print, and sometimes fax - you'd expect to pay a premium for such convenient convergence. But the three MFPs we've rounded up certainly defy that logic. Not only do they add photo printing to t......

Return to Affordable Ink Jet Cartridges
There was no shouting, but the throbbing vein on the side of the Canon product manager's temple was all I needed to see to know that maybe, just maybe, I had crossed the line. Why Aren't Camera Companies Making Money?
We've been hearing foreboding tidings out of Japan all week: First Konica Minolta announces pretty serious headcount reductions and product streamlining as a way to combat the huge losses they've been suffering. Four Great Cameras that Keep it Simple
Digital cameras are getting cheaper, but that doesn't mean they're getting any easier to use. In fact, as new features keep getting tacked on to entry-level point-and-shoot cameras, sometimes the opposite is true. But have no fear: we've picked out four Editors' Choice winners from different camera categories that take great pictures and are a bree......

Are Your Photos Safe?
The Wall Street Journal recently ran an exhaustive report on a startling discovery: Online photo-sharing sites may not store your photos forever. In fact, if you don't pay or use their services for a long enough time, they may delete them much sooner than you think.

Is this really such startling, disturbing news? Isn't this obvious to anyone ......

Straight Shooting: Find the Perfect D-SLR
"Unless you've been napping for the past year or so, you've probably noticed that Digital Single Lens Reflex (D-SLR) cameras have come way down in price, and are now within reach of nearly all consumers. You can spend as little as $600 for an entry-level D-SLR with a kit lens, or ten times that for a professional one, which doesn't come with a lens......
